Located on Sagamore Lake in New York, this house was designed by Joseph Tanney and Robert Luntz via RESOLUTION : 4 ARCHITECTURE. Project description from the architects “Situated on dramatically sloped wooded lot overlooking Sagamore Lake in New York State, this home will provide the clients an opportunity to enjoy the natural setting and leave behind their Manhattan lifestyles…. On the buildings east side, a Kal-wall system encloses both the first floor bathroom and the second floor hallway which is experientially connected via the stairwell. The stairwell landing just away from the rest of the landscape. This gesture emphasizes the relationship between the buildings, momentarily placing the occupant within the landscape. The gesture emphasizes the relationship between the building, the site and the lake before visitors enter the private bedrooms upstairs.”. Detail from the architects “Continuing up to the elevated living room, the ocean view, which at first is concealed by the mass of the concrete fireplace, slowly reveals itself. The shafts of light that stream through southern clearstory support this sense of tension and suspense. The interior sequence continues the unfolding play of hide and reveal, culminating in a treetop roof deck above the master bedroom. The spaces gradually open up to the land like a flower, and the ocean view is revealed by one’s sequential progression up and through the house. A sloping glass roof overlapping the north wall of the house renders ambiguous the distinction between interior and exterior space. Large sliding doors open the house up to the deck. The children’s bedrooms are located below the main living room floor and open directly onto the great northern landscape and ocean beyond. Ships prisms, like those that one finds on the old schooners on the Vineyard, are scattered amongst the floorboards of the deck and light the stone patio off the downstairs bedrooms.”

Situated in the heart of Texas hill country this house was designed by Patrick Tighe architects. From the architects “This project is a residential compound situated in the heart of Texas hill country. The 3200 square foot residence is on a fourteen acre sloped site with native oaks, natural springs and unobstructed views. The layout of the house is a direct response to the site conditions. The plan is organized so as to experience the many features of the landscape. A panoramic view that spans 260 degrees is experienced as well as other more site specific orientations. The front of the house is made of heavy materials that rise from the earth. The heavy, solid, grounded front is in sharp contrast to the more ephemeral back. At the down slope side of the house, the structure becomes lighter and opens to the landscape. Steel pipe columns splay at unsuspecting angles dancing the rugged landscape.”
From the architects “A large and busy family required extensive alterations to their 1970′s house which had small dark spaces with unsatisfactory relationships to the existing outdoor areas of swimming pool and tennis court……It wraps around the north of the house to create an intermediary space between the inside and outside of both levels, and also connect the upper and lower levels. The outdoor fireplace is treated as a sculptural element and defines the edge of the exterior room. A new spa pool, retiled swimming pool, terraces and landscaping create a relaxed environment for energetic family life……”
